Porsche Keys Are Not Regular Car Keys
A Porsche key is not the same job as a Honda or a Toyota key. Porsche uses encrypted transponders and immobilizer protocols that are specific to the brand, sometimes specific to individual model years. That is why generic universal programmers do not work on Porsche, and why cheap online key blanks fail to authenticate even after cutting. Doing Porsche keys correctly requires programming rigs that specifically communicate with Porsche immobilizer modules. Porsche Models by Key Generation
Not every Porsche key is the same job. Which programming rig we bring depends on the generation, and honest coverage varies by model year. Here is what we handle and where the honest limits are.
911 pre-996 generation (1998 and earlier)
Classic mechanical key with a separate infrared remote for the alarm and central locking. The key itself is a straightforward cut, and the remote programming for the earlier ones we can handle on-site. These cars are collector territory now, and we have made keys for a handful of them over the years without issue.
911 996 and 997 (1999-2011)
Transponder chip embedded in the key head plus a separate remote fob for the doors. Programming is well-documented and our rig handles these on-site every time. Cayman and Boxster from this era use the same key architecture.
911 991 and 992 (2012 to current)
Proximity smart key that talks to the car via encrypted RF. Programming requires the latest Porsche-compatible tools. Most 991 model years we do on-site. Very newest 992 model years occasionally require dealer-level software for all-keys-lost. Spare cuts we can handle either way.
Cayenne and Macan
These SUV lines share components with Volkswagen and Audi platforms, so the immobilizer architecture is closer to those brands than to the sports car lineup. Good news: that platform is well-supported by independent programmers. We do Cayenne and Macan work regularly across all model years, on-site.
Panamera and Taycan
Panamera uses the smart key from the same generation as the 991/992. Taycan is the newest platform and has the most recent security architecture. Both are within our capability for spare cuts and most programming, though brand-new Taycan model years may require the dealer for all-keys-lost specifically. Why Porsche Programming Is Different
The short version: Porsche invests heavily in anti-theft. The immobilizer chip in a Porsche key is encrypted specifically for Porsche vehicles, and the tools that communicate with the Porsche immobilizer module are not the same tools that program a Toyota or a Ford transponder. Generic universal programmers cannot authenticate against Porsche security, which is why cheap online key blanks fail even after they are cut correctly.
For any Porsche newer than about 1998, the key is not just a physical key. It is an electronic authentication device. Cut a blank key with the right pattern and it will turn the ignition mechanically, but the immobilizer will refuse to let the engine start until the key transponder proves itself to the car computer. That handshake happens in encrypted radio frequency. Doing it wrong locks the car out of the immobilizer entirely, which is a very expensive dealer visit to fix.

Adding a fob to a car that already has one working key. Lockouts on any Porsche. Ignition diagnostics. For these jobs we come to you, we cost less than the dealer, and we finish in 30 to 60 minutes on-site instead of a service-department wait.
When the dealer actually is the right call. All-keys-lost on the very newest Taycan and 992 model years, where the security architecture requires dealer-only software that has not been made available to independent locksmiths yet. Any Porsche where the immobilizer module itself has failed and needs replacement (rare, but it happens). Some pre-1998 collector 911 restorations where original-spec keys need to be sourced from Porsche Classic. In these cases we tell you honestly during the phone call, and we do not charge a trip fee for the honest answer.
