Ignition Repair and Replacement in San Diego

If your key is hard to turn, sticks in the ignition, or will not crank the engine, you probably need ignition repair or ignition replacement in San Diego. We have been doing this for over 8 years. License LCO7479. We handle worn ignition cylinder fixes, ignition switch replacement, and full ignition cylinder replacement for every major make and model. We come to your car, diagnose the problem, and fix it on the spot. No tow to the dealer.

Ignition problems usually start small. A key that needs jiggling. A delayed start. A cylinder that sticks when it is cold in the morning. Most people ignore these signs until the car will not start at all. By that point you are stranded somewhere with a key that snaps off in the cylinder or refuses to turn. We catch these issues early when we can fix them with a wafer kit or a small repair instead of a full ignition cylinder replacement. The earlier you call, the cheaper the repair tends to be.

We cover all of San Diego County. Most jobs we do at the curb where the car is sitting. Our vans carry ignition cylinders, wafer kits, switches, and key programmers for the makes and models we see most often. If you are in El Cajon, Hillcrest, La Jolla, Chula Vista, or anywhere else in the county, we can usually be there in 15 to 30 minutes. Call (619) 416-2467, tell us the make and model and what the car is doing, and we will give you an honest quote before anyone heads out.

Every ignition job we do comes with a 6-month warranty on parts and labor. We use OEM-quality cylinders and switches, not cheap aftermarket parts that fail in a year. If the car is undrivable, we prioritize getting to you fast.

Our Ignition Repair Solutions in San Diego

Ignition Cylinder Replacement

When an ignition cylinder is too worn or damaged to repair, we replace it with a new OEM-quality unit matched to your vehicle. Our mobile units carry cylinders for popular makes including Honda, Toyota, Ford, Chevrolet, Nissan, and many more.

Key Won't Turn Repair

A key that refuses to turn in the ignition is one of the most common issues we resolve. This is typically caused by worn wafers inside the cylinder, a worn key, or a steering wheel lock binding. We diagnose the exact cause and fix it on site.

Stuck Key Removal

If your key is stuck in the ignition and will not come out, do not force it. You risk breaking it off inside the cylinder. Our technicians use precision extraction techniques to safely remove the stuck key and repair the underlying retention issue.

Ignition Wafer Repair

Inside every ignition cylinder are small wafers (similar to pin tumblers in door locks) that wear down over time. We disassemble the cylinder, replace worn wafers, and reassemble it, often saving you the cost of a complete cylinder replacement.

Ignition Switch Diagnosis

Sometimes the problem is not the cylinder but the electrical ignition switch behind it. We diagnose whether the issue is mechanical (cylinder) or electrical (switch) and provide the appropriate repair, ensuring your vehicle starts reliably every time.

How Ignition Repair Works

Here is what actually happens when you call us about an ignition problem. First, we ask the year, make, and model, plus what the car is doing. That tells us which parts to bring. A 2008 Honda Civic with a sticky cylinder is a totally different repair than a 2018 BMW with electronic steering lock failure.

When we arrive, we do not guess. The ignition assembly has two main parts. The cylinder is the mechanical part where you insert the key. The switch is the electrical part behind it that talks to the starter. Problems can come from either one. Misdiagnosing wastes money. We test the cylinder mechanically, check the key for wear, look at wafer alignment inside, and verify the switch is sending the right signal. Only then do we tell you what needs fixing.

For worn cylinders, the most common issue we see, we pull the cylinder, take it apart, and look at the internal wafers. These small spring-loaded pieces match the cuts on your key. After years of use they wear down, chip, or get stuck. If only a few are bad, we replace those wafers individually and reassemble the cylinder. That is a quicker, cheaper repair than swapping the whole cylinder. If the cylinder housing is cracked or most of the wafers are worn, full ignition cylinder replacement is the right call.

Ignition cylinder replacement means putting in a new cylinder. It can come with a new key, or we can rekey the new cylinder to match your existing door key so you only need one key. If your vehicle uses a transponder, the new key has to be programmed to your car immobilizer. We do that on the spot. This is where a real automotive locksmith saves you money over a regular mechanic. We do both the mechanical lock work and the electronic key programming in one visit.

Most ignition repairs take 30 minutes to 2 hours. Honda and Toyota cylinders go pretty fast. German and Japanese cars with complex steering column designs (we see a lot of these in La Jolla and Del Mar) take longer because there is more to take apart and put back together. Every repair gets tested before we leave, and every repair has a 6-month warranty.

Ignition Replacement vs. Ignition Repair: Which One Do You Need?

This is one of the questions we get most often. The answer depends on what is wrong with the assembly.

Ignition repair means we fix the existing parts. Replace worn wafers, lubricate the cylinder, swap a damaged spring or retention clip. The cylinder and switch stay in place. This works when the wear is limited to small replaceable internal parts and the housing is still solid.

Ignition replacement means we swap the whole cylinder, the switch, or both with new units. Ignition cylinder replacement is the right move when the cylinder housing is cracked, when too many wafers are worn out, when a key broke off and damaged the keyway, or when an attempted theft chewed up the assembly internally. Ignition switch replacement is needed when the electrical contacts behind the cylinder have burned out and the car will not crank even though the cylinder turns fine.

Roughly speaking, repair handles a lot of the common cases we see. Replacement is needed about 30 percent of the time in our experience. We tell you which one you need before any work starts, and we will not push replacement when repair will do the job. If you have searched for ignition replacement services near me and want a real person to look at the car before quoting a price, that is exactly what we do.

Signs You Need Ignition Repair or Replacement

Ignition problems rarely happen without warning. Here are the most common signs that your car ignition is failing, and what each one usually means.

Your key is hard to turn. If you have to apply more force than usual, or wiggle the key to find the sweet spot, the internal wafers are wearing down. This is the most common early warning sign. We see it most often on cars with 80,000+ miles. Do not ignore it. Eventually the key will not turn at all and you will be stranded in a parking lot. Catching it now usually means a cheaper repair.

Your key gets stuck in the ignition. A key that will not come out after you turn off the car points to a retention problem inside the cylinder. Could be a worn wafer that is not retracting, a damaged key, or a faulty return spring. Do not force the key out. You will break it off inside the cylinder and turn a small repair into a much bigger one. Call (619) 416-2467 and we will come to you. If a key has already broken off inside, our broken key extraction service handles that without damaging the cylinder.

Your key turns but the engine does not start. This usually points to a worn ignition switch (the electrical part) rather than the cylinder. The switch sits behind the cylinder. Over time the switch contacts wear out and stop sending the start signal to the starter. Common in older Ford, Honda, and Toyota models we service across San Diego, especially in El Cajon and Santee where higher-mileage vehicles are common.

Your steering wheel locks and the key will not turn. Sometimes this is a simple steering lock bind. Turn the wheel slightly while turning the key and it usually frees up. If the wiggle trick stops working, the cylinder or steering column lock mechanism is wearing out. Get it looked at before you damage the key or cylinder by forcing it.

Dashboard security warning lights. A key icon, immobilizer light, or security warning means the transponder is not communicating properly with the ignition. This needs the same diagnostic equipment our car key replacement technicians carry. Modern security systems are tied to the ignition, so we diagnose and fix the electronic side along with anything mechanical.

Common Ignition Problems by Vehicle Make

We see ignition problems on every make and model on San Diego roads. Here is what tends to fail on the cars we work on most often, and what the fix usually involves.

Honda and Acura cylinder failure. Honda Civic, Accord, and CR-V from 2003 to 2015 are known for ignition cylinder wear. The wafers are relatively soft and wear down faster than average, especially when there is a heavy key ring pulling on the key. We replace Honda ignition wafers and full cylinders regularly across San Diego, from students near SDSU to commuters in Poway and Rancho Bernardo. Our vans stock Honda-specific cylinder kits for same-day repair.

Ford ignition switch issues. Many Ford trucks and SUVs (F-150, Escape, Explorer) develop ignition switch failure where the key turns but the starter does not engage. Switch contacts wear out, creating intermittent starting problems that get worse over time. Ignition switch replacement on a Ford takes about an hour at your location.

Toyota and Lexus stuck keys. Toyota Camry, Corolla, and Lexus models sometimes get a stuck key from a worn cylinder or a shift interlock cable issue. We figure out which one and fix it. Common on high-mileage Toyotas in El Cajon, Santee, and Lakeside.

GM Passlock and anti-theft issues. Chevrolet, GMC, and Buick vehicles with the Passlock or Passkey anti-theft system can get stuck where the security light is on and the car cranks but will not start. Caused by a sensor failure in the cylinder housing. We do GM Passlock resets, sensor replacement, and full cylinder service to clear the anti-theft activation.

European vehicles. BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Volkswagen use ELV (Electronic Steering Lock) systems that combine the ignition, steering lock, and immobilizer into one electronic module. Failures need specialized diagnostic equipment and key programming. We carry the latest European vehicle programming tools so we can fix these at your location instead of sending you to the dealer. Ignition Repair FAQ: San Diego

How much does ignition repair or replacement cost in San Diego?

Ignition repair and ignition replacement costs vary depending on the make, model, and the specific repair needed. A simple wafer repair or stuck key extraction is usually the cheapest option. Full ignition cylinder replacement costs more because of the new part and the key programming time. Ignition switch replacement falls somewhere in between. European and luxury vehicles cost more because the parts and programming are specialized. We give you an upfront quote after diagnosing the issue. You will know the price before any work starts. Call (619) 416-2467 with your make and model for an estimate.

Can you repair my ignition at my location or do I need a tow?

In almost every case we do the repair at your location with no towing. Our vans carry ignition cylinders, wafer kits, switches, and programming equipment for the makes and models we see most often. Whether your car is parked at home in La Mesa, at work in Sorrento Valley, or stranded in a parking lot in Mission Valley, we come to you. Only in rare cases involving complex electronic module failures might a dealer visit be needed, and we will tell you that upfront before you spend money.

How long does ignition repair take?

Most ignition repairs take 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the vehicle and the issue. Wafer replacements and stuck key extractions are usually 30 to 45 minutes. Full ignition cylinder replacement with key programming takes 1 to 2 hours. Vehicles with complex steering columns or advanced electronic steering locks take longer. Our technician gives you an accurate time estimate after the initial diagnosis.

My key turns but the car will not start. Is that an ignition problem?

This usually points to a failing ignition switch (the electrical part) rather than the ignition cylinder (the mechanical part you insert the key into). The switch sits behind the cylinder and sends the start signal. When its contacts wear out, the key turns freely but the starter does not engage. That said, this same symptom can also mean a dead battery, a starter motor failure, or a transponder key problem. We do a full diagnosis to figure out the actual cause before recommending repairs.

Can I drive with a bad ignition switch?

You can sometimes get the car to start with a failing ignition switch, but driving with it is risky. The switch controls power to the engine and electrical systems. When it fails it can shut off mid-drive, killing power steering, brakes, and engine. That is a serious safety issue, especially in San Diego freeway traffic. If your car cranks fine but stalls, has flickering dashboard lights, or shuts off when you hit a bump, the switch is failing. Get an ignition switch replacement done before something happens at 65 mph on the 805.

How do I know if my car needs an ignition replacement?

You probably need ignition replacement (not just repair) if any of these are true. The cylinder housing is cracked or physically damaged. A key broke off inside and got stuck. The switch contacts are completely burned out. Most of the wafers in the cylinder are worn down. Someone tried to break in and damaged the assembly. We tell you on the spot which one you need. Repair when possible, replacement when necessary. Most ignition replacements take 1 to 2 hours including any key programming.

Will I need a new key after ignition repair?

It depends on the repair. If we fix your existing cylinder by replacing worn wafers, your original key keeps working. If the cylinder is replaced with a new unit, you may get a new key, or we can rekey the new cylinder to match your existing door key so you only need one key. For vehicles with transponder systems, any new key has to be programmed to your immobilizer. We handle the cutting and programming on site as part of the ignition job.

What causes ignition cylinders to fail?

The most common cause is gradual wear of the internal wafers from years of daily use. Heavy keychains pulling sideways on the key in the ignition speed up that wear noticeably. Keep your ignition key on a lightweight ring if you can. Dirt and dust that get into the keyway also cause premature wear. Using a worn or poorly cut key chips the wafer edges over time. And attempted theft or someone forcing a wrong key into the lock damages the cylinder internally. A dry graphite lubricant once or twice a year helps keep things smooth.
