Door Lock Installation in San Diego: Which Brand Is Most Secure, Pricing, and Same-Day Service

Every week we get calls from San Diego homeowners who just moved in, had a break-in attempt, or finally decided the flimsy lock on their front door needs to go. The questions are usually the same: which lock is actually worth buying, what is a fair price to pay, and can someone come out today. This post answers all three.

If you searched for door lock installation near me and landed here, good. We cover all of San Diego County and most jobs get done the same day you call.

Which Door Lock Brand Is Most Secure?

The three brands that come up most often when homeowners do their research are Schlage, Kwikset, and Yale. All three make quality products, but they are not the same, and the differences matter depending on what you are protecting and where you live.

Schlage

Schlage is our most recommended brand for residential front doors. Their B60N deadbolt and the Schlage B series in general carry an ANSI Grade 1 rating, which is the highest residential security rating available. That means they have been tested to withstand forced entry, picking, and bumping better than most locks at a similar price point.

The metal is heavier. The cylinder is tighter. If someone tries to kick in a door secured with a Schlage Grade 1 deadbolt paired with a proper strike plate, they are going to have a hard time. We install Schlage locks more than any other brand.

Kwikset

Kwikset is everywhere because it is affordable and widely available. Most builder-grade homes in San Diego come with Kwikset locks already installed. They are not bad locks, but most standard Kwikset products carry an ANSI Grade 2 or Grade 3 rating, which is a step down in security.

That said, Kwikset's SmartKey technology is worth mentioning. It lets you rekey the lock yourself in about 30 seconds without a locksmith. Useful if you lose a key and just want a fast fix. The SmartKey cylinder does have some vulnerability to manipulation attacks, so for a primary entry point we still lean toward Schlage.

Yale

Yale has been making locks for over 150 years and their quality shows. Their residential deadbolts and smart locks are solid, and they tend to have a cleaner aesthetic than Schlage if that matters to you. Yale's high-security line performs well in forced entry tests and they make some of the better keypad and smart lock options on the market right now.

For standard deadbolts, Schlage edges Yale slightly on security for the price. But if you are looking at smart locks or keypad locks, Yale is absolutely worth considering alongside Schlage.

The honest answer

Brand matters less than grade. An ANSI Grade 1 Kwikset will outperform an ANSI Grade 3 Schlage. Always ask about the security grade before you buy. And no matter which brand you choose, a quality lock on a weak door frame does nothing. The strike plate and the frame around it matter just as much as the lock itself. We check both when we install.

How Much Should a Locksmith Charge to Install a Lock?

This is the question everyone wants a straight number for, and the honest answer is that there is no single number. Pricing depends on several factors, and a locksmith who gives you a flat rate without knowing anything about your situation is probably guessing. Here is what actually affects the cost.

Type of lock

A standard deadbolt installation on an already-prepared door is the quickest job. A smart lock or keypad lock takes longer because of the wiring, app setup, or battery configuration. A high-security lock with a reinforced strike plate takes longer still. More complexity means more time, and time is a big part of labor cost.

Your door material

Wood doors are the easiest to work with. If new holes need to be drilled, a wood door is straightforward. Steel doors and iron doors are a different story. Drilling through metal requires different tools, takes more time, and increases labor cost. Fiberglass doors fall somewhere in between. If you have an iron security door or a reinforced steel exterior door, expect to pay more than you would for a standard wood interior door.

Whether the door is already prepared

If you are replacing an existing lock with one that fits the same hole pattern, installation is fast. If the new lock requires a different bore size, or if you are adding a deadbolt to a door that only had a knob lock, the locksmith needs to drill. That adds time and cost.

Security grade of the lock

A Grade 1 high-security lock with a reinforced strike plate and security screws takes longer to install correctly than a basic Grade 3 knob lock. The hardware costs more and the install is more involved. That is reflected in the price.

What a fair range looks like in San Diego

Without knowing your specific situation, the best approach is to call and describe your door, your current lock, and what you want installed. Any reputable locksmith will give you a quote over the phone before sending anyone out. Watch out for locksmiths who quote a very low number on the phone and then add fees once they arrive. Get the full price confirmed before work starts.

We give straight quotes on every call. No surprises when we arrive. Call us at (619) 416-2467 and we will walk through the specifics with you and give you a clear number up front.

Can a Locksmith Install a Keypad Lock Same Day?

Yes, in most cases. If you are searching for lock installation near me and need a keypad lock put in today, same-day installation is very doable for most standard residential doors in San Diego.

We carry keypad and smart lock models from Schlage and Yale in our vans for common installations. If you have a specific model you already purchased or want us to source something in particular, a quick call in the morning usually means we can have it done by afternoon.

The one situation where same day gets harder is a custom or specialty lock for a non-standard door, or a model that requires a special order. For those, we will tell you upfront what the timeline looks like.

Keypad locks are one of the more popular installs we do right now. Landlords use them between tenants to avoid rekeying every time. Homeowners use them so family members can get in without carrying keys. People with housekeepers or regular service visits like being able to give out a code and delete it when needed. The installation itself usually takes 30 to 45 minutes on a standard wood door.

All our lock installation and lock change work comes with a 6-month warranty on parts and labor. Licensed locksmith in San Diego, license LCO7479.
